Constructing a new community centre in England’s newest city

Location: Melbourne, Chelmsford, Essex.
Timescale: 14 months.
Brief: to demolish the existing structure and build a replacement community centre.

Delivery:
Right from the start, a full design team was involved in the design of the building, including an architect, structural engineers, mechanical/electrical engineers, building control, highways, local authorities and statutory utility providers.

Supported by this design team, JDL was able to start the build alongside the client’s chosen quantity surveyors and project managers. The project is still under construction and JDL is constantly monitoring progress to ensure that the employer’s requirements, including deadlines, standards and budgets, are all met.

The final design features a large span roof with architectural glazing, a high vaulted ceiling to cater for events and indoor games, 18 remotely-controlled Velux roof lights, a glazed viewing area in the main hall, an internal platform lift and remote entry systems.

This is a vital community improvement project, funded by local and national organisations, and JDL has been pleased to receive plenty of positive feedback from the local community.
